COMPASSION... My work explores the power dynamic inherent in human interaction as it manifests in the social roles of the empowered and those vulnerable to them. Through “correctional devices” that appeal to our self-help culture, these contraptions invert the status quo, and embolden the indefensible. The drawings are plans for machines referring to something available from a TV infomercial or department store. Like exercise machines that invariably get stored in a corner promising overnight miracles, these apparatuses have an added function: their mere presence creates guilt and rumination. As stand alone sculptures, they are a nagging reminder of the need for change. With the demonstrative use of the figure, they create acts of empowerment never before exercised, and expose new perspective on reasons and motivations for our behavior. - LA
