Gizmology
Artist: Mark
Esper
Portfolio Online: Catalogue of Past Projects
September 10 - October 16, 2004
Mark Esper’s third solo exhibit at Dam, Stuhltrager makes history. For
the first time in Williamsburg, a single artist holds three simultaneous solo
shows at three separate galleries.
In a uniquely unified effort to support a single artist, Dam, Stuhltrager Gallery
has collaborated with Front Room Gallery and Naked Duck Gallery to present Mark
Esper: “Gizmology”.
Three galleries uniting in September, possibly the most anticipated month for
art, focuses attention on the caliber of Mark Esper’s artwork rather than
on individual venues and symbolizes the excitement surrounding this artist.
With electronic circuits and mechanical devices, Esper has created a new installation
specific for each gallery. The sculptures utilize the physical properties of
electromagnetism, gravity, light and sound as metaphors for human relationships.
Experimental rather than static, Esper’s projects convey their content
through what they do as much as by what they look like. At Dam, Stuhltrager:
In the dark, motorized red, blue and yellow LED windmills unveil the viewer’s
shadowed movements to only him/her in white light. Onlookers see red, blue and
yellow figures. At Front Room: Suspended electromagnetic heads repel and attract
each other in self-organizing patterns. Speakers amplify a dialogue only as
the corresponding head passes over it, triggering a few words. At Naked Duck:
Six guns aiming from darkened bunkers along narrow walls greet and then follow
viewers.
