jumble
n. 1.a: MEJBLE J U M B L E
Everyday, in offices, around dining tables, and on trains across America, newspapers
are read for articles that both inform and entertain. It is likely that the
same newspaper delivering carefully constructed, grammatically wise, clearly
stated articles, shares page space with a JUMBLE.
In a newspaper JUMBLE, a group of selected letters are presented in an unexpected
order or uncommon context. The viewer comprehends the letters have an inherent
commonality or trait that defines the group. Viewers then seek what association
the individual letters have as a group.
Letters, basic elements of language, carry such latent and recognizable symbolism
that many variations of JUMBLE can exist. However different, each variation
“JUMBLES” concepts of selection, organization and recognizable symbols
to delineate from conventions of reading.
JUMBLE is an exhibit of photographs, paintings, drawings and video by artists
who utilize elements of selection, organization, and symbolism in an unconventional
way.
