Materials: lights, plastic, mirror, proximity sensor, electrical circuits, aluminum leaf Size: 17" x 15" x 6"/ including light bulbs Reflecting is a mirror that invites self-examination. Upon gazing into the mirror, the viewer's presence is sensed. This triggers the external lamps to go off. However, a light inside the box is triggered on, illuminating an object on the other side of the partial mirror. The object is a life mask of the artist that has been split and mounted on a mirror, each side facing the other. The mask has aluminum leaf finish so all the surfaces are reflective. The viewer sees the image of a reflected face. That image is repeated to the vanishing point, like a hall of mirrors. The internal illumination is white light filtered through agitated water. The effect is an ever-changing pattern of light like the one you see on the bottom of a swimming pool on a sunny day. The feeling evokes the flame-like flicker of consciousness. After fifteen seconds, the internal illumination slowly fades. The external lights come back on.
